Bat City Comic Professionals is a nonprofit comic shop and organization that works to empower young people to improve reading and writing skills through a love of comic books and graphic novels. Shock the Vote asked Bat City Comic Professionals a series of Shocking questions and this is what they had to say:
What does your organization do?
Bat City Comic Professionals is building the next generation of superheroes by empowering young people to improve reading and writing skills through comics education. Bat City runs a full-scale comic shop complete with subscription service on Austin’s Eastside, where proceeds go toward scholarships and educational resources for the community.
Why do you love Austin?
Austin is the kind of place where people come from all over to take a shot at pursuing their dreams. It’s full of life, adventure, and opportunity. Much like the cities of our favorite superheroes, Austin is a character all its own, brightening the pages of each of our stories and helping shape the path we walk on.
Why do you vote?
Not all heroes wear capes, but all of them speak up for others, doing their part to make a difference.
Who is one of your favorite Austin entertainment groups?
We love our many local comic creators – Drew Edwards, Donny Cates, Megan Hutchison, Becky Cloonan – just to name a few!!!
Who is your favorite Austin business or restaurant?
Posse East – home to Redneck the comic, written by local creator Donny Cates! And of course, who doesn’t think Top Notch is alright, alright, alright!
Who is your favorite nonprofit organization in Austin?
Between the Pages! Love our literary friends and leaders who bring stories to life for kids from all backgrounds!
What is your favorite Halloween treat?
Our shop cat’s name is Pawmpkin, so anything pumpkin is good to us!
