Shocking Questions with Austin Bright Light and Design

Launched in 2017 from a successful Kickstarter campaign, Austin Bright Light and Design was established with the main objective of creating brilliant wearable art. ABLD uses the latest in lighting design and combines it with their own creative design resulting in items that guarantee the wearer quite literally lights up the room. From refractive eyewear to rainbow LED gloves to luminous rave toys, Austin Bright Light and Design’s inventory is sure to inspire countless glowing smiles. Their particularly eye-catching hooded Firefly Cloak with holographic sequins and color-programmable trim debuted onstage at the 2018 ACL Festival by Kevin Russell of the Austin swamp-funk band Shinyribs. The Firefly Cloak is available for purchase or rental. For more information about Austin Bright Light and Design and their fun, wearable art, please visit

Shock the Vote asked Gerry Gilligan and Jason Balcauski, founders of Austin Bright Light and Design, a series of Shocking questions. Here is what they had to say:

What does your organization do?

We are a fashion company that makes unique lighted costumes and clothing that brings more light to your night, and glow to your soul! Our wearable art is meant to draw people together and make them smile.

Why do you love Austin?

Austin's music scene brought us here, and its business community has helped us both thrive and helped us make our dreams come true! We really can't say enough good things about this town. The love of music made our founders, Jason Balcauski and Gerry Gilligan, fast friends and through a great network of performers, musicians, and fashion advisors we made our little idea into a business that eventually made the airwaves of Austin City Limits Live. We'll be in reruns forever on the greatest music show on TV, even if we aren't holding a guitar!

Why do you vote?

Because we want to be responsible citizens. It's our civic duty, and of utmost importance to support democracy. We care deeply about our communities, and we want to see our friends and family thrive in this country.

What is one of your favorite Austin entertainment groups?

Who is your favorite Austin business or restaurant?

Who is your favorite nonprofit organization in Austin?

What is your favorite Halloween treat?

Nestlé's Crunch bars
